Hiroshima

Day 7. Our last day in Japan. First stop was the Peace Memorial museum and gardens telling the story of what happened here at 8.15am on 6 August 1945. In a few seconds almost everything in an area 4 km across was flattened, followed by fire storms that engulfed the entire city killing 150,000 people.

This building, below, remained standing even though it was directly below the atom bomb blast, 600 metres overhead.


The gardens were very busy with people contemplating the various memorials in the warm sunshine.



After we had done the same we set off in search of lunch and found an amazing restaurant.


We then headed to the Shukkien garden which is a tranquil Japanese garden, with manicured miniature trees and koi ponds, in the centre of Hiroshima. A really amazing and peaceful place. It was so warm that we even saw a butterfly and a terrapin sunning itself.








And that's about all folks. We are now at Hiroshima airport about to fly to Tokyo and then, after an overnight transit, to London.
